Copywriting – What is Copywriting Anyway?

Copywriting is a type of writing that has the specific goal of encouraging sales. There are many forms of copywriting. Marketing firms hire copywriters to do their advertisements. Website owners hire professional writers to tackle jobs like website content and sales ads. The goal of this form of content is to deliver a message to the visitor of the website. For example, if your website is selling baby products, your copywriting message is simple: buy baby products!

Call to Action

One of the most important aspects of copywriting is the call to action. The entire piece is written to inform and enlighten the reader. The goal is to show them the real value in the business’s product or service. Yet, even though all of this is fine and good, the bottom line is the most important one. It is the call to action. With all of this information in hand, what is it that you want the reader to do? Generally, that is to buy the product.

There are also other calls of action that are just as important.

? Click on a link for any reason including to reach a landing page
? Sign up for additional information, for emails or for other services and products
? Buy the product!
? Read more information on another page or another website
? For a free trial or free gift
? To email or otherwise contact someone about something.

Depending on the goals of the specific page, the call to action gives individuals a direct task to do in it.

Other Forms of Copywriting

There are other forms of copywriting, too. For example, much of the writing done on the web today is designed to get the sale.

This may be written in the format of an article where the reader is being “sold” on what the product or service can offer. Some forms of writing, such as an editorial, dives far deeper into the topic to explore what the issues are and then offers a solution. Other forms are more like landing pages and sales pages where the pitch is perfectly clear: this is the best product or service out there and here’s why.

Some forms of copywriting are far more educational and less sales-like. For example, an entire article can be written on the benefits of the product and service without ever mentioning the actual company. These articles can explore areas that are specific and important. It can also offer opinions and reviews. While not a specific sales article, this form of writing works because it gains the trust of the reader leading to the sale.

As you consider the various types of copywriting, it is important to ensure your website incorporates as many different types as possible. The audience, the product or service, and the goals of the company all play a role in the most appropriate forms of advertising used. A professional copywriter will work with the company to determine the best format for their needs.
